The reason snails sleep are they alike many other animals hibernate. Most snails cannot last that long without eating and being active. Some only live for a year anyway. The few that can last more than a year without any activity tend to be long-lived species living in arid climates. It is normal for them to “aestivate” in the hot, dry summers, effectively going into a state of suspended animation until it rains. In real deserts the are a few that can survive in this state for several years. The authenticated record is 6 years for a species from Baja California in Mexico, and there are others that have been clocked at 5 years.
